The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
Malcolm Gladwell
(UK: Abacus@AbacusBooks, 2002; USA: Back Bay Books@backbaybooks, 2002)

The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate.

This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

LeBron James, Basketball player, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist | Basketball website: Los Angeles Lakers | Businesses: LRMR VenturesSpringHill Entertainment; UNINTERRUPTED | Foundation: LeBron James Family Foundation

LeBron says: ‘For me, reading books is relaxing honestly. You spend so much preparation for the games, sometimes you just need to get away from it for a little bit. The reading has helped me get away from the game a little bit, and I’m able to zero in once I’m done and get ready for the games.’

LeBron James is a professional basketball star, having played for Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat in the National Basketball Association league. In 2017, he is the second highest paid sporting athlete in the world, pipped to the top spot only by Real Madrid soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2018, James opted out of his contract with the Cavaliers to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Despite his wealth, LeBron lives a relatively frugal lifestyle. His management company, LMRM Ventures, handles the marketing of his brand and his various sponsor endorsement contracts (such as his recent lifetime association deal with Nike) and manages a roster of fellow sports stars. As LeBron comes towards the twilight of his career, the company is branching out into other areas of business, too. His production company – SpringHill Entertainment – aims to create television, film and digital contact for cross-cultural audiences and his INTERRUPTED venture is an all-digital sports programming subscription network, with videos from the athlete’s perspective, original series, podcasts, and documentaries.

Set up in 2005, just after his NBA draft in 2003, he established the LeBron James Family Foundation, to ‘positively affect the lives of children and young adults through education and co-curricular educational initiatives’ in his home city of Akron, OH. LeBron is also a generous benefactor of other US causes related to children and education.

Knowing of Lebron’s admiration for his work, in August 2017 author and basketball fan Malcolm Gladwell challenged the basketball star to a mile-long running race for charity, after a running match-up meme went viral on Twitter. One of Gladwell’s other titles is David and Goliath (2013), in which he has a chapter about basketball tactics. LeBron James has yet to take up the challenge.
